Can You Remove a Painted Popcorn Ceiling?
Painted popcorn ceilings are tricky but not impossible to remove. Here's what you need to know before starting.
Yes — painted popcorn ceilings can be removed. But it's more difficult than removing unpainted texture, and here's why.
Why Paint Makes Removal Harder
Standard popcorn ceiling removal works by wetting the texture with a garden sprayer or pump sprayer. The texture absorbs the water, softens, and then scrapes off fairly easily without damaging the drywall below.
When someone has painted over the popcorn texture, the paint creates a barrier. Water can't penetrate as easily, so the texture doesn't soften the same way. Trying to scrape it dry risks gouging the drywall, and trying to wet it risks over-saturating the drywall paper, causing it to delaminate.
How We Handle Painted Ceilings
We've removed hundreds of painted popcorn ceilings in Utah Valley homes. Here's our approach:
1. Score the surface. We lightly score the painted texture with a scoring tool to allow water to penetrate through the paint.
2. Multiple light passes with water. Rather than saturating all at once, we mist in passes and let the water work through the scored surface.
3. Careful scraping. We use wider tools and lighter pressure to avoid gouging. This takes more time but protects the drywall.
4. Inspect and repair. Painted ceilings often reveal more drywall damage underneath. We expect this and include it in the process.
Does It Cost More?
Yes, painted ceilings typically cost 20–40% more per square foot because of the extra labor. We'll let you know upfront if your ceiling is painted and price accordingly.
What About Skim Coat?
After removing a painted ceiling, skim coat and sanding are especially important because the drywall surface is often rougher. We include this in our full-service option and strongly recommend it.
