Asbestos Testing Guidance for Utah Valley Popcorn Ceilings

If your Utah Valley home was built before 1980, your popcorn ceiling may contain asbestos. We don't do asbestos abatement, but we take this seriously and always recommend testing before any removal work begins in older homes.

Asbestos Testing in Utah Valley

Asbestos was commonly added to popcorn ceiling material as a fire retardant from the 1950s through the late 1970s. In 1978, the EPA banned asbestos in ceiling texture products โ€” but contractors were allowed to use existing stock until it ran out, which means some homes built as late as 1980 or 1981 may still have asbestos-containing material.

Why This Matters

Asbestos fibers are safe when left undisturbed. But when you scrape or disturb a ceiling that contains asbestos, fibers are released into the air โ€” and inhaling them is a serious health risk linked to lung disease and cancer. This is why testing first is so important.

We Don't Do Asbestos Abatement

To be very clear: we are a popcorn ceiling removal company, not an asbestos abatement contractor. If your ceiling tests positive for asbestos, you'll need a licensed abatement contractor to remove it safely before we can help with the drywall finishing and painting.

How to Get Your Ceiling Tested

1. Find a certified inspector โ€” Look for a Utah-licensed asbestos inspector or industrial hygienist

2. Sample collection โ€” They'll take a small sample of your ceiling material (this should only be done by a professional)

3. Lab testing โ€” The sample is sent to a certified lab for analysis

4. Results โ€” You'll receive written results within a few days

If Your Ceiling Tests Negative

Great news โ€” we're ready to get started. We'll schedule your removal, protect your space, and take care of the whole job.

If Your Ceiling Tests Positive

You'll need to hire a licensed abatement contractor to remove the asbestos-containing material. Once that's complete and you have clearance documentation, we can step in to finish the ceiling repair, skim coat, and painting.
